From fairytale whimsy to sewalongs and succulents – here are the top 8 quilt trends that we can’t WAIT to be filling up our insta feed in the new year…
1. Blue and white quilts
We’re all about giving classic quilting looks and techniques a modern twist! Two tone quilts have been ticking all the right boxes for us in 2017: look out for calming contemporary blue hues in the new year!
2. Rainbow colours
We’ve loved seeing a sea of rainbow brights fill up our Instagram feeds this year, and this trend is showing no sign of dying down in 2018. Reach for your stash, pick out a rainbow of scraps and get sewing!
3. Cacti and succulents (yes, STILL!).
Happy days! Not only are our windowsills at home filled with pots of these pretties, they’ve been making their way into fabric prints and quilt design for a while now.
4. Fairytale whimsy
Possibly the most fun of all the quilt trends? Think gnomes, toadstools and mystical creatures – look out for fantasy-filled motifs in fabric design and quilt tops in the months to come!
We were lucky enough to join in with a few Instagram quiltalongs in 2017, and now they’re one of our favourite things to have come out of the online quilt community. The trend will expand next year to see an increase in block of the month clubs and subscription boxes. Sarah Edgar from Pretty Fabrics and Trims and Jessie Fincham from Sew and Quilt are both running a few in the new year.
6 English Paper Piecing
The Brimfield block has brought a fresh wave of EPP to our lives and we’re loving it! So soothing, easy to stitch on the go (several of our team here at LPQ headquarters have been known to take their EPP on the train or on holiday). We’re loving the new perforated pieces from Paper Pieces. Sew and Quilt are stocking the Brimfield Block if you’re in the UK and want to have a go!
7. Lightning bolts!
This is our Digital Editor Zoe’s favourite emerging design trends (nothing to do with her love of Harry Potter, so she claims). They’re the latest weather motif to break through into popular design and we spied a happy-making growth in them featuring in or favourite shops’ Christmas ranges. Look out for more in the new year… check out this collection of Spoonflower fabrics to sew the look or try this FPP pattern from Slostudio on Etsy…

We’re calling it! Look to the stars for quilt inspo in 2018 – we’re looking forward to interstellar fabrics & patterns inspired by constellations! Sew the look with Jo Hart’s Modern Zodiac FPP blocks in issue 55 (main image at the top of this post) and Susan Standen’s Stardust quilt (below) in the same issue.
