Oh happy days! Our 50th issue is out now and (in case you missed it) and we’re just a bit excited about this month’s free cover gift. We’ve got together with the lovely folk over at Art Gallery Fabrics to bring you our 32 Modern Quilt Blocks book. As a special bonus for our blog readers, we’ll be posting an extra quilt block tutorial here on the blog every week while issue 50 is on sale! Scroll down to find out how to sew this bonus cross block…

Before you reach for your rotary cutter…

Our 50th issue fun doesn’t end with us sewing up a bonanza of quilt blocks this month! We’re throwing a sewalong over on our Instagram (join in over at @lovequiltingmag and check out the hashtag #lpq32blocksSAL) and for one month only*, UK readers can get 50% off the shop price of Love Patchwork & Quilting magazine. *Offer ends 16th August.

And don’t forget to come back next week for your second bonus block tutorial – next time we’ll be having fun with triangles!

How to construct your quilt block

Step one: Join the Fabric A and B 15in x 112in strips, along the long edge, to create a strip set measuring 15in x 212in.

Step two: Cut the Fabric A/B strip into three pieces – one measuring 612in x 212in and two measuring 212in squares.

Step three: Sew a Fabric C 212in square to either side of the 212in Fabric A/B squares, with the seam between Fabric A and B running horizontally.

Step four: Sew these pieced rows to the top and bottom of the 612in x 212in Fabric A/B strip set.

Step five: Add the Fabric C 612in x 178in strips to either side of the pieced unit. Then add the 914in x 178in to the top and bottom of the pieced unit.

Step six: Turn the block on point (using the layout diagram for reference) and trim to a 612in square, discarding any excess fabric, to complete the block.
